About Anniquin
In 1905, when sailboats drop anchor in misty dawn in Mexico Bay, Koreans who have dreamed a paradise if the earth are discharged like parcels. Among them are Cheon-Dong, a former butcher, old man Eo Bong-Heon, a ruined nobleman, his children Dong-Ju and Kuk-Hee, and Mu-Chil, once a translator who becomes cat's paw of ranch owner. They dream a new life looking for fertile land and new world but there are only a barren land that yellow sands make them close eyes and prickly anniquin whose thorn can erode their flesh if they are pricked. Their long hair was cut and suffer from labor to harvest anniquin leaves under watchmen's maltreatment and hot weather. Some try to escape unable to bear the hard labor but most of them are shot to death or tortured. Women are harassed by watchmen and even some gets comfort by selling bodies to Mexicans. As he saves Kuk-Hee from a trouble, Cheon-Dong and Kuk-Hee came to be favorably inclined. Cheon-Dong has unusual spirit defiance of his social status and Kuk-Hee determines to get married to him.
