Review
After a three-year hiatus from the music scene to pursue a film career, Uhm Jung-hwa makes up lost ground in a hurry with her new double CD. The two discs, cleverly titled ``Self¡¯¡¯ and ``Control,¡¯¡¯ touch base with some of the more interesting developments in dance music during the singer¡¯s break, as well as reconnect her to her K-pop roots. The ``Self¡¯¡¯ disc finds Uhm diving headfirst into house and electronica, genres she¡¯s dabbled in before but not to this extent. Though the production and mixing are top-notch, Uhm seems a little out of her waters trying to play the sultry house diva. ``Control,¡¯¡¯ on the other hand, is more of what we expect from Uhm, with bright dance pop pieces and sentimental ballads, and a few slinky R&B numbers mixed in. With all the divergent styles, the two discs together make for a bit of a schizophrenic listen, but it¡¯s good to see such an established name in K-pop trying to take some musical risks.
